Tom Yum (Thailand Style)
Tom Yum Goong soup is one of the most well known dishes in Thailand Cuisine. There are 2 different types of tom yum, the clear version and the creamy version.
The name "Tom Yum" derives from two Thai words: "tom" and "yam". "Tom" refers to the boiling process, while "yam" refers to a Thai spicy and sour salad. Indeed, tom yum has distinct hot and sour flavours, with fragrant spices and herbs generously used in the broth.
There’s two different types of Tom Yum Soup:
- Clear Tom Yum Soup (Tom Yum Goong Nam Sai); and
- Creamy Tom Yum Soup (Tom Yum Goong Nam Khon) which is made from the clear version with the addition of evaporated milk and a good hit of Thai Chilli Paste.
The soup broth flavour base is the same, but the key difference is that Tom Kha has chilli paste and a splash of coconut milk added.
